鮮やかなパステルによって描かれた本作は、清々しい高原の空気を思わせる。手前から伸びる道は一度丘に隠れ、湖畔に近づくにつれて太く明確になっていく。遠近法的な整合性は意図的に排されているが、それは髙山辰雄がこの湖畔の道そのものに心を惹かれたことを示している。

画面を斜めに横切る池の表現も、物理的な自然描写からは逸脱している。しかしその配置によって、背後に連なる山の穏やかな稜線が引き立ち、画面全体に静かな律動を生み出している。写実的に「描き移す」ことよりも、目の前の風景から受け取った心象をパステルで写しとることに重きが置かれており、そこに高山独自の詩情が漂っている。

Executed in vivid pastels, this work evokes the refreshing atmosphere of a highland scene. A path stretches from the foreground, disappearing briefly behind a hill before widening and becoming more distinct as it approaches the lakeshore. Traditional perspective is deliberately set aside, suggesting that Takayama’s true fascination lay with the lakeside road itself.

The pond, placed diagonally across the composition, defies naturalistic depiction, yet its presence accentuates the gentle contours of the surrounding mountains, lending the work a quiet rhythm. Rather than seeking to replicate the scene as it appeared, Takayama used pastels to capture his inner impression of the landscape—transforming observation into a poetic vision that embodies his distinctive sensibility.
