林を抜けるとそこに広がるのは畑であろうか。整然と並ぶ畝が画面にリズムを与え、鮮やかな緑色は新たな生命力を宿しているように映る。奥の空は赤みを帯びた青で彩られ、間もなく夜明けを迎える朝の空気を感じさせる。

手前の林には青緑の岩絵具が丹念に塗り重ねられ、影の部分に仄暗さが漂う。太陽がまだ昇らぬ時刻でありながら、畑と林との対比によって陰と陽が巧みに使い分けられ、天と地の相関が鮮やかに示されている。そこには、光の到来を待ち望む人間の根源的な感覚が映し出されているかのようだ。

本作は1956年頃の制作とされ、2008年に練馬区立美術館で開催された「髙山辰雄遺作展」に出品された。

Tatsuo Takayama ”The Hill at Dawn”

Beyond the grove, fields unfold in neat rows, their ridges lending rhythm to the composition. The vivid greens suggest the vitality of new life, while the distant sky—tinged with red against blue—captures the atmosphere of morning just before the break of day.

In the foreground, the trees are rendered with layers of blue-green mineral pigments, creating shadows imbued with a quiet darkness. Though the sun has yet to rise, Takayama employs the contrast between the luminous fields and the shaded grove to express the interplay of light and shadow, of heaven and earth. The scene evokes a primal sense of anticipation for the coming of light.

Believed to have been painted around 1956, this work was exhibited at the Tatsuo Takayama Memorial Exhibition held at the Nerima Art Museum in 2008.
