Maki Susumu’s The Height of Spring captures both the enduring presence of nature and the fleeting brilliance of the season. At the top of the composition, clusters of wisteria blossoms cascade in full bloom, each petal rendered with meticulous care. The gnarled trunk, expressed through delicate Tarashikomi (traditional Japanese dripping-in painting technique) and soft washes, conveys the sense of a vine that has weathered countless years.

Below, two majestic koi glide serenely through the water, their massive bodies propelled by steady, powerful tails. Painted in gold pigment and ink, every scale and fin is carefully depicted, imbuing the fish with a timeless dignity born of longevity.

The interplay of deep ultramarine and ink brings the water’s surface to life, at once accentuating the koi’s presence and evoking a sense of depth and clarity. In uniting the ancient wisteria with the stately koi, the work conveys both the passage of time and the transient beauty of spring at its height, inviting viewers into a scene that is at once eternal and ephemeral.
