Susumu Maki – About the Artist

Japanese painter. Born in 1940 in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture. After graduating from the Japanese Painting Department at Tokyo University of the Arts and completing graduate studies, he studied under Chizuru Gokura and Hideharu Iwahashi. He first entered the Inten Exhibition in 1963. From 1970 onward, he received numerous prestigious awards, including the Daikan Prize, the Minister of Education Prize, and the Prime Minister's Prize, for works such as “White Space,” “Dragon Gate,” “Persian Gate,” “Wind Dancing,” and “Sea Roar.” He served as a member of the Inten Exhibition and a councilor of the Art Academy, and dedicated himself to mentoring younger artists as a professor and later professor emeritus at Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts. He also gained international recognition, holding a solo exhibition in Paris in 2000. He is highly regarded as a painter who pioneered new horizons in Japanese painting through his poetic and fantastical landscape expressions and unique compositional techniques.
