Kōichi Takeuchi’s monumental painting Gen (The Dark Gibbon) centers on the anciently revered black gibbon, known as Genen in classical tradition. At the lower portion of the composition, the gibbon sits quietly before a tree with willow-like branches, adorned with small, warm-colored fruits that hang one by one. Its posture exudes composure, yet the piercing gaze and elongated claws reveal a latent power ready to strike.

The black fur is rendered with painstaking precision—not soft and delicate, but with a dense, armor-like weight that enhances the animal’s formidable presence. Takeuchi’s sharp eye, cultivated under Kayō Yamaguchi, shines through in this work, which fuses the classical lineage of Nihonga animal painting with a vivid, modern vitality.
