Tatsuo Takayama ”Tsuki(Moon)”
In this work, Takayama sets the full moon’s radiance against the depths of night. Though the sky is enveloped in darkness, moonlight gently illuminates the trees and winding path, allowing them to emerge with a quiet glow. The rutted road curves uncertainly into the distance, suggesting an uneasy journey—yet the moon’s presence seems to dispel such apprehension. Viewers may wonder: is this the outward path, the return, or perhaps an entirely new landscape encountered for the first time?
After World War II, Takayama immersed himself in Paul Gauguin’s art, developing a style built upon areas of flattened color. From around 1950, his works reveal this pursuit: though surfaces are painted with restrained simplicity, when viewed as a whole, a profound sense of space and perspective arises. Here, the tall tree at the left of the composition reinforces that depth.
Moon was exhibited in 1952 at the second Shiei-kai held at Takashimaya. It stands as a significant work from the period in which Takayama established his distinctive postwar style.
