Tatsuo Takayama ”The Parakeets”
This work features two parakeets clad in vivid green, commanding the viewer’s attention as the central motif of the composition. Without resorting to elaborate detail, Takayama captures their vitality through the precise rendering of their beaks, tails, and overall forms—a testament to his masterful power of depiction.
Though parrots are most often seen perched on branches, they may also rest upon broad leaves. Here, the birds are shown upon such leaves, painted in hues of green, coral, and ultramarine. These colors lend the foliage a strong presence, while the surrounding ocher ground enhances the impact of the green, imparting both warmth and balance to the composition.
The fascination lies in the interplay of greens: the parakeets’ luminous plumage contrasts with the subdued, deeper tones of the leaves. Through this resonance—amplified by the presence of two birds—Takayama evokes both the vitality and the stillness of nature, expressed as a harmony of colors.
