Takehiko Sugawara “The Reclining Dragon Pine”
This work is boldly executed upon a meticulously arranged ground of platinum leaf. Sugawara employs a unique technique of his own invention, combining soot ink with animal glue and applying it in vigorous strokes. As the medium dries, natural shrinkage and cracking occur, creating a texture that evokes the rugged bark of an aged pine tree weathered through the centuries. Such a method is highly unconventional within the realm of Nihonga, and it has become a hallmark of Sugawara’s artistry.
The pine needles are rendered through the scattering of malachite pigment, not by delineating each needle individually but by emphasizing the weight and density of the branches as a whole. The trunk, imbued with gold and red tones, conveys the undulating vitality of the pine—not only through form but also through color—suggesting the majestic presence of a “reclining dragon.”
Celebrated as an innovative approach within Japanese painting, the work was exhibited at the 21st Century Exhibition in 2019. Standing at the intersection of tradition and experimentation, it exemplifies Sugawara’s distinctive contribution to contemporary Nihonga.
