Mika Okumura “Yasoukyoku(Nocturne)”
At the lower part of the composition, the townscape and houses are shaped into squares, gently constructing the scene. Unlike the forceful dissection and reconstruction characteristic of Analytical Cubism, Okumura’s approach conveys a softer impression—more like a patchwork of delicate fabrics, lightly joined together to evoke the memory of a town at night.
Above, a half-moon emerges from behind the clouds, casting its glow over distant mountains, a bridge, and a lighthouse. Beyond them, the sea unfolds in shades of aqua blue, its colors flowing seamlessly into the mist or clouds that drift across the town. By unifying the hues of sea and sky, Okumura erases their boundary, creating a sense of depth that contrasts with the flat, geometric arrangement of the townscape.
True to its title, Nocturne, the work carries a gentle rhythm befitting the night. The moon, the distant view, the sea, the drifting haze, and the quiet town together form a harmonious cadence—like a tender melody unfolding in the stillness of night.
