Tatsuo Takayama ”The Hill”
This painting depicts what seems to be an autumn evening. A path and hillside rendered in warm tones dominate the composition, leading toward a cluster of houses. In the pale blue sky, the moon hangs quietly, suggesting the gentle passage of time. Although the forms are simplified and stylized, the surface planes vividly capture the presence of grasses and trees growing on the hill.
The depiction of the houses conveys a sense of structural solidity, recalling elements of Cubist expression. Organic shapes of the natural world and the geometric solidity of human dwellings are set in deliberate contrast, creating a dialogue between the animate and the inanimate.
The moon, faintly bright like a midnight sun, softens the strong hues of the hillside—likely struck by the setting sun—and lends the scene a more tender atmosphere. Believed to date from the late 1940s, this work bears the strong imprint of Paul Gauguin’s influence, reflecting the formative years in which Takayama was shaping his postwar style. It was exhibited at the ninth Seiyō-kai held at Mitsukoshi, further underscoring its place within the artist’s early postwar career.
