Yoshiyuki Nakano  “Akaneiro no Toki (Moment of madder-red)”

Two snipe soar across a sky dyed in madder-red hues.
Shades of blue, pink, and violet blend into a subtle gradation, evoking not only the evening sky but also the gentle shimmer of a water surface. This atmospheric effect is achieved through the karabake technique, in which dry brushes are swept across mineral pigments still moist, creating a delicate sense of depth and movement.

In contrast, the birds are rendered with striking clarity. Their slightly smaller heads and elongated beaks reveal Nakano Yoshiyuki’s distinctive manner of depiction, born from keen observation. With wings spread wide as if about to descend, the pair suggests the search for a resting place for the night, embodying the breath and vitality of life itself.

The madder-red sky conveys the passage of time at dusk, while the birds in flight reflect the resilience of daily existence. Together, they form a lyrical harmony of nature and life.

This work was exhibited at the 15th 21st Century Exhibition, organized by the Tokyo Art Club in 2015.
