Eien Iwahashi ”Clouds, Wandering Free”
Eien Iwahashi devoted much of his life to painting clouds.
For him, clouds were ever-changing and ephemeral—forms that constantly shift and eventually vanish. It was precisely through direct observation that he could capture their fleeting presence. The ever-transforming sky became a profound motif, reflecting both his reverence for nature and his sensitivity to light, and it remained a central theme throughout his career.
This work, though composed with striking simplicity, holds a depth of expression. By layering mineral pigments thinly and repeatedly, Iwahashi evokes the transparency and depth of a clear blue sky. The clouds gradually loosen and scatter, embodying the passage of time moment by moment. Through this subtle transformation, the painting conveys both the impermanence of nature and the beauty inherent in each fleeting instant.
Through the motif of clouds—so transient and elusive—Iwahashi sought to reveal an eternal truth within the momentary.
