Tatsuoki Ichino ”The Fish”
Three fish glide serenely through the sea.
While their forms recall the Moorish Idol, the familiar stripes are omitted, replaced instead by an emphasis on scales. Their beaks and fins are rendered in pure white, while each individual scale is meticulously painted in vivid tones of red, blue, green, and yellow. More than decorative, this radiance suggests the very brilliance of life itself.
The sea, too, is imbued with varied colors, reflecting a world alive with countless forms of existence. These three fish may thus be seen as symbols of nature’s abundance and the timeless harmony that dwells within it.
